The nurse midwife is an integral part of the women?s health clinical team and provides leadership in health care on behalf of the woman and families in both the inpatient and outpatient settings in the Center for Women?s Health and Midwifery, Women?s Center at YNHH, and labor and birth at the Vidone Birth Center at YNHH-St. Raphael?s campus. The CNM provides full scope midwifery services to women in the nurse midwifery model of care. The CNM evaluates, treats, and manages the care of the patients. The CNM also provides care to gyn patients including gynecological and breast health, medical management of acute/chronic issues, education and provision of psychosocial support. Antenatal care is provided in the traditional model of care, as well as in group sessions. As the attending CNM on the labor and birth unit, the CNM also evaluates patients and manages labors and birth in collaboration with the qualified obstetrician/gynecologist. The education of nurse midwifery students and residents is an integral part of the role of the CNM in all clinical settings. Community activities are required in addition to collaborating with advocacy groups and local agencies.
1. Evaluates, treats, and makes disposition of their patients who present to CWHM and L&B.
Takes appropriate history and performs physical exam relative to patient complaints and assesses
patient record if available as per periodic chart review.
1 .1 Obtains appropriate ancillary radiographic laboratory studies according to department standards
as determined by periodic chart review.
1 .2 Advises patient of evaluation and arranges for appropriate treatment of problem according to
department standards as determined by periodic chart review.
1 .3 Advises patient specifically when follow-up is indicated as determined by chart review.
1 .4 Performs all activities in patient assessment in a caring and professional manner as determined by
colleagues, patient feedback, and by supervisory observation.
2. Prepares appropriate patient records as mandated by JCAHO.

f. Participates in at least one (1) appropriate hospital quality assurance or quality improvement committee.
9. Conducts and participates in research, and scholarly activities designed to improve the health care of women and infants.
10. Manages floor problems, emergency cases, ER admission, etc. when taking in-house call at night.

2. Perform therapeutic procedures in the area of clinical specialization:
a. Transcervical Foley catheter placement (for induction of labor)

c. Misoprostol and or Prostaglandin Gel administration (for induction)
3. Discharge patient to home or admit to Labor & Birth or Maternal Special Care Unit.
4. Communicate delayed results (cultures, FFN) to patients after discharge
via telephone contact.
12. Perform vaginal deliveries
1.In collaboration with the healthcare team, the midwife will manage women with non- omplications of health, labor or fetus if vaginal birth in the cephalic presentation appears likely.
Registered nurse licensure; Certified Nurse Midwife license; requires both undergraduate and master's degree.
Three (3) to five (5) years midwifery experience in culturally diverse setting.
State of CT Registered nurse license; State of CT Licensed Nurse Midwife license; Certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife through the American Midwifery Certification Board,
